I'll admit that I love a good vintage fur. I have fond them to be the most ideal vintage accessory because they provide color, texture, and warmth. . .fashionable and practical all in one. For my 40s wardrobe, I love to add furs to it but, what did furs in the 40s look like? What styles, trends, shapes, and colors? That is what I want to address here in this post because a proper 40s look can be easily ruined with the wrong style of fur. Let's start with coats and jackets
Fur coats in this period followed the same line and silhouette of most regular coats. They are angular in the shoulders, roomy in the body, not necessarily a defined waist (there are some examples but they are very rare - not the norm). Roomy sleeves that may or may bot have a wide cuff. Neckline and collar styles varied from narrow collars that wrapped around the neck to full lapels that certainly kept the shoulders warm. In terms of length, the coats ended around past the knee to mid calf and the jackets around the hip or just past it. Jackets, like the coats, had roomy sleeves, were roomy in the body and could be cut away at the hem edge to create interest. Jackets could also have hoods attached. How did these garments stay closed? Coats made use of large hook and eyes, as did jackets. They could also have decorative and functional clasps.
