A Suit for a Young Man, 1940

Men’s civilian wear can be a nice addition to a reenacting wardrobe to a young man who is old enough to wear more mature styles but too young for a uniform. Today, a nice double breasted suit pattern for you to try out. I think a suit, although a very simple pattern, can be difficult to execute well. There is tailoring required but thankfully, our modern stores have alternatives we can easily put to use and still achieve nice results. One alternative is press in interfacing or if you are more adventurous, you can still buy the canvas traditionally needed. As you can see, there are two styles shown. One with long pants and the other with shorter pants. The option for shorter pants is a nice alternative for warmer weather or else a young boy. For longer pants, that is a more mature look or even a nice winter alternative.
For this pattern, it is not a unique pattern but there are some features that I am sure you ought to take note of. For more, note the dart located in the underarm area of the jacket front. This dart allows you to have the jacket cut with only a front and back piece and not fuss with a side piece. This dart, depending on the man you are sewing for, could be omitted but I would include it first and do a fitting. If the fit looks off with it, omit it. The jacket back also needs to be eased into the front at the shoulder as indicated by the little squiggle lines. Don't forget your facing and linings. The sleeve is a two piece coat sleeve and you will see a little notch protruding off one of the sleeve patterns, that is for that button detailing on the sleeve. That is an expert touch and can really add an air of professionalism to your work.
For the short pants, you will see that the cut is a little different than for the long pant as indicated by the little dotted lines. If you should choose the short pattern, you will have yo eye ball that dotted line. The other dotted line here on the front pant pattern is the indication for the fly and not a different cutting line for the shorts.
I know that this pattern is not as simple as it looks but I have chosen to make this the pattern for Free Pattern Friday because it goes to show the versatility of this book. Der Goldene Schnitt was meant for the average woman with a large family that needed to be clothed. That large family of hers more than likely included boys, girls, men, women, and maybe an infant or two and she needed to be prepared. This little but mighty book offered her all the patterns she could ever need in one place.  . . .including men's wear.
